Coast Episcopal School Students raised $1058.26 during a Lenten project to buy mosquito nets through Episcopal Relief and Development.
The money raised purchased 88 nets and 3 people can sleep under one net which protects the lives of 264 people.
The mosquito nets will be used in African nations to prevent the spread of Malaria. The most at risk people for malaria are pregnant women and children under five. When people use the insecticide treated nets from Episcopal Relief and Development, it is hoped the incident rate of malaria will decrease.
“The understanding of resurrection took on a deeper meaning as the students realized they had brought life to so many people who, though they live on the other side of the world, are truly our brothers and sisters,” said the Rev. Diane Livingston, the Mississippi Coordinator for Episcopal Relief and Development.
Students at Coast Episcopal School brought in coins, dollars, checks and a huge desire to buy nets to help children avoid malaria. The students also learned about how the mosquito that carries malaria comes down lower to the ground during the very early morning hours and how sleeping under the net protects people from malaria.
